New Esthetics Apprenticeship Standards under consideration

The Board for Barbers & Cosmetology wants to hear from you!

As of February 2017, the Virginia Board for Barbers and Cosmetology revised its Esthetics Regulations to allow for apprenticeships in esthetics and master esthetics. Completion of an apprenticeship will now be another method to qualify for the exams, in addition to the existing esthetics school training programs.

The Board has drafted standards to govern these apprenticeships and would like to solicit input--from esthetics spas in particular, as the future sponsors for any esthetician or master esthetician apprentices--before finalizing the proposed draft. A copy of the draft Standards of Apprenticeships for estheticians and master estheticians is available to review here

The Board’s Esthetics Apprenticeship Committee will host a public comment session on June 28, 2017, at 9:00 a.m. in Board Room 2, at 9960 Mayland Drive in Richmond. Anyone who attends will be allowed five minutes to comment on the standards. In addition, the Board is accepting written comments that will be provided to the Committee prior to its meeting.

After the public comment session, the Committee will make revisions to the draft apprenticeship standards and work processes, taking into account all comments received. Please submit any written comments on the proposed apprenticeship standards no later than 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 21, 2017, so they can be provided to the Committee in time for the June 28th meeting.
