    Exam Application Process

    1. Applicant/exam candidate submits completed application and exam fees to National Testing Network (NTN).
    2. NTN reviews complete application and all required eligibility materials (see Candidate Information Bulletins).
    3. After passing the required exam(s), NTN provides the applicant with a License Fee Notice (fee card) along with the exam score. It is not necessary to notify the Board that you have passed an examination. NTN provides the Board with candidate scores on a daily basis. 
    4. Applicant mails the License Fee Notice and the required license fee to the Virginia Board.
    5. Once you have met all licensure requirements, including passing the exam, Board staff will process and mail your license. Be sure to notify the Board and NTN of any mailing address changes.

    Practical   $85
    Written    $85
    Barber, Cosmetology, Esthetics, Nail Technician and Wax Technician exams include two parts: practical and written. The Tattooer and Body Piercer exams consist only of the written exam. 

    Exam Dates and Locations 

    NTN testing sites are located in Charlottesville, Manassas, Richmond, Roanoke, and Virginia Beach.

    Exam Languages  The written exam is offered in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Korean for the following:
    • barber
    • cosmetologist
    • esthetician
    • instructor
    • nail technician
    • wax technician.
    However, the written exam is only offered in English for: master esthetician, body piercer, master permanent cosmetic tattooer, permanent cosmetic tattooer, and tattoer.

    Also, please note that all practical exams (when required) are administered only in English.
